Justice Garibaldi was the first female member of the New Jersey Supreme Court. A specialist in tax law who lived in Weehawken, she was at the time of her nomination a partner in the law firm of Riker, Danzig, Scherer, and Hyland. Before joining that firm, she was on the staff of the New York regional counsel in the Internal Revenue Service. At the time of her nomination, Justice Garibaldi was serving as president of the New Jersey State Bar Association. She was also a director of the State Chamber of Commerce, New Jersey Bell Telephone Co., and the Washington Savings Bank and was a trustee of St. Peter's College. The justice was a member of the New York and District of Columbia bars as well as that of New Jersey. She lectured at New York University Tax Institute, and New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the Seton Hall University Tax Conference, and the Estate Planning Council of Central New Jersey.
Justice Garibaldi was born in Jersey City on Nov. 26, 1934. She attended Stevens Academy, Hoboken, and Connecticut College, where she was graduated in 1956. She received her law degree at Columbia University Law School in 1959, and was admitted to the bar the following year. She received her master's degree in tax law at New York University in 1963.
She served as chairwoman of the Weehawken Charter Commission in 1968 and 1969 and was Weehawken's municipal judge from 1973 to 1975. She served on the Court from Nov. 17, 1982 until she retired on Jan. 31, 2000. She died on Jan. 15, 2016 at the age of 82.
