New Jersey Judiciary Celebrates Juror Appreciation Week

The New Jersey Judiciary is highlighting Juror Appreciation Week to recognize the contributions to justice made by jurors.  

Linked closely with Law Day on May 1, Juror Appreciation Week is celebrated May 2-6.  Both events symbolize the “national dedication to the principles of government under law.” 

“Jury service remains the cornerstone of our justice system. Jurors provide a critically important service to our democracy, and do so with integrity and dedication,” said Glenn A. Grant, acting administrative director of the courts. 

A New Jersey resident can be summoned for one of three types of jury service: as a petit juror, a grand juror, or a state grand juror. Petit jury service includes criminal and civil trials. Grand jurors, either in their home county or on a state grand jury panel, determine whether there is sufficient evidence to move forward with criminal charges against a defendant.

The Judiciary recently implemented on-demand orientation for petit jurors, allowing jurors to review orientation prior to their service at a time convenient to them and watch orientation materials multiple times if needed. This innovative approach typifies the Judiciary’s commitment to ensuring justice while respecting the time of the individual juror.
