Notice – Aggregate New Jersey Attorney Demographic Information
NOTICE TO THE BAR
AGGREGATE NEW JERSEY ATTORNEY DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
As authorized by the Supreme Court, this notice publishes aggregate information as to the demographics of attorneys who practice in New Jersey. This preliminary Bar profile reflects information as to race, ethnicity, and gender, as voluntarily provided by attorneys during the annual attorney registration process.
Background
The Supreme Court authorized the collection of voluntary attorney demographic information, as recommended by its Committee on Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement and announced in an October 4, 2021 notice to the bar. The Judiciary enhanced the attorney online registration system to add the approved demographic questions, with a preface noting the confidentiality of responses and an explanation that the questions are designed to help the Judiciary understand the diversity and representativeness of registered attorneys.
Aggregate Demographic Information
A sizable majority of attorneys who completed registration in 2023 and in 2024 shared demographic information (rather than selecting the “no response” option that is provided for each question).
In 2024, more than 85,000 attorneys completed registration, with the majority self-identifying as to race, ethnicity, and gender, as follows:
Next Steps
Information collected for 2023 and 2024 is available on the Judiciary website (njcourts.gov) and will be supplemented on an annual basis. The Judiciary will continue to maintain the confidentiality of individual attorney responses.
