How many adults are affected by guardianships?

Guardianship records are maintained at the county level, and the number of active guardianships statewide is presently unknown. Between July 2006 and June 2008, approximately 3,900 guardians were appointed (i.e., less than 2,000 per year). In 2012 and 2014, approximately 2,400 and 2,600 guardians were appointed, respectively. Guardianships for elderly citizens suffering from dementia, Alzheimer's disease or other debilitating conditions can last for many years. Guardianships for developmentally disabled young adults can last for decades.
