Justice Schreiber was born in New York City on Nov. 18, 1914. He attended public schools in Elizabeth, and was graduated in 1936 from Yale University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He took his LL.B. at Yale Law School in 1939 and was a member of the Editorial Board of the Yale Law Journal. He was admitted to the bar in 1940 and became a counsellor in 1947.
Justice Schreiber served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, when he was discharged with the rank of lieutenant. His service included direction of the War Crimes Review Section of the Judge Advocate's Office for the Third Army. Justice Schreiber served as a member of the Union County Park Commission. He was one of the Republican delegates to the 1966 Constitutional Convention called to prepare a plan for reapportionment of the Legislature.
Justice Schreiber's appointment as a Superior Court judge by Gov. William T Cahill became effective Oct. 27, 1972. Gov. Brendan T. Byrne appointed Justice Schreiber to the Supreme Court on Jan. 8, 1975, and the Senate confirmed the appointment Jan. 27, but it did not become effective until March I, 1975, upon the retirement of Justice Nathan L. Jacobs. He served until his retirement on Nov. 17, 1984. Justice Schreiber died on Aug. 5, 2009, at the age of 94. He and his wife, the former Ruth Butt, had one daughter.
