Justice Wachenfeld was born in Orange on Feb. 24, 1889. He was educated in the public schools of Orange and the New York University Law School. He was admitted to the Bar of New Jersey as an attorney in 1911 and as a counsellor in 1914. He practiced law in Newark as a member of the firm of Lum, Fairlie and Wachenfeld until his appointment to the Supreme Court. He was Assistant Prosecutor of Essex County from 1922 until 1924, when he was appointed as Prosecutor of the Pleas in Essex County in 1933 by Governor Moore and was reappointed in 1938 also by Governor Moore and again in 1943 by Governor Edison. In 1944, he was appointed as Director of Civilian Defense by Governor Edge, who also nominated him as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1946. Justice Wachenfeld was appointed by Governor Driscoll an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court under the Constitution of 1947. He retired from the Court in 1959 and died April 22, 1969, at the age of 80.
